Every semester I am lucky to speak to incoming freshman as far as First Year Experience. This year I tried to make it a more practical experience, as I shared how they can impress faculty–and how they can not impress us.
I was pretty excited to see much of my advice reflected in this article today in the New York Times, which offers suggestions from academic veterans.
Among the key pieces of advice–extend yourself, do the work, take care of yourself, work the system and GO TO CLASS!
It does not sound hard–and it truly is not hard.
This is the beginning of the new you, the person you’d like to be in the real world. And your professors are here to help you become that person. Can’t wait to work with you!
